The candle represents dual elements, of illumination and of burning. Namely, to ‘burn’ the surplus and to ‘illuminate’ the inner essence

Beit Shammai maintained
  that first and foremost,
    a person must ‘abstain
     from evil’; thus the
    numbers of candles is
   reduced every day
For Beit Hillel, the primary   focus is on continual      growth, the enthusiasm      
for which illuminates       
 one’s essence, and        automatically destroys    
 the surplus .
