Code-switching is the practice of alternating between languages in a single conversation for various needs.
DEFINITION
Code-switching can serve various functions, the first of these is accomodation of the needs. Which means that a speaker can switch to another language to explain a topic if the listener has difficulty understanding a term or phrase.
FUNCTIONS
Another function of code-switching is expression of emotions. The speaker may switch the language to express his/her emotions better.
Code-switching can also be used to convey social identity. For example, a speaker can switch to his/her native language when he/she is around relatives.
"Linguistic context" refers to situations where code-switching occurs based on the most appropriate language to express a specific topic. "Cultural context" happens when language usage is influenced by cultural norms, and speakers may switch languages to signify their social identity or align themselves with specific cultural groups.
