Definition:
Fake News is a term that refers to news articles or other forms of media that is not factual and has been created or manipulated to achieve certain goals. These could be to influence political views, to tear down a celebrity’s reputation, or to make fast and easy money from ads. 
Why is it Important to be able to Identify Fake News
Multiple studies show that many people believe almost everything they see online and cannot identify Fake News. It is important that we learn to identify Fake News because of how harmful it can be to the target and the readers.
How is Fake News Harmful
Fake news is harmful because it causes so many people to believe completely made up information. 
An example of fake news is false claims that the MMR vaccine can cause autism. As a result 87% of English children received the vaccine in 2018, putting 13% at risk.

To Spot Fake News
6 TIPS
Before you believe any sensational news stories make sure you check the publisher. Make sure it comes from a trustworthy, well known news company and that it is not the only place it is being published.

Always check the by line for an author. If you cannot find one it is probably sponsored content or an ad. Read the writers bio and give them a quick search online.

Check the date as it could be an old article. If it is breaking news, always be wary as important facts can be confused if no real journalism has occurred.

Sometimes the shocking title does not line up with the content and is just click bait. Be careful If it targets your bias against something. If you dislike something, you are more likely to believe bad things about it.

Real news articles list where they got their information from. Make sure they are primary sources, not secondary sources. Fake news articles can be written with an older fake news article as a source, making it look like real news.

Some companies are devoted to factchecking and debunking. You can find info on articles or publishers on these websites, Snopes, Politifact, Factcheck.org, and more.
