What should a great parent or guardian do in order to promote a healthy relationship?

Keep your promise.

This builds mutual trust and mutual respect.

Mutual trust becomes the foundation of
a healthy relationship.
For example,

" I will be with you in 5 min!"

"I will buy you what you want for Christmas!"

"We are going to the party!"

"We are going on holidays,
where you want!"

"We will have pizza
 for dinner!"

"We will play
 a game!"

"I will let you go to your friend's house!

"We are getting a dog!"

"We are going to Mecca for Hadj"

"We will finish early!"

Whatever the promise was, keep it.

Which brings us to the second part of this...

Do not make rules  that you cannot keep.

If you told your child that you will leave
from the cinema when they start yelling,
 then do it.

Be really clear with instructions.

The purpose is to set boundaries.
Do not take pleasure punishing them.

Children test boundaries.
If you are predictable,
(by keeping your word)
children do not waste time
to test you.

Breaking a promise has a twofold implication:

1. When we break a promise, others learn that they cannot count on us.

UNRELIABLE
2. We teach that it is okay to let someone down.
WE SET
THE WRONG
EXAMPLE!

When we chose to put something ahead of our commitment, the child perceives that we do not value them.

And a few other things, like

We teach that it is okay
to say things they do not mean.

We teach that it is okay to get angry in order to get what they want.

We teach that it is okay
for people to fail them.
In the future, the child will likely seek to be amongst people who are unreliable, because it is a familiar pattern.
So, what do we do?

Keep your promise!
