In ancient times, humans used signals like smoke or drums to send messages.

By the time of ancient empires, 
written letters became the primary mode of long-distance communication. 
While slow, these early methods laid the foundation for the organized communication systems we know today.
Telegraph & Telephone Era

Our next stop is the 19th century
Telegraph
In 1837, Samuel Morse developed the electric telegraph
In 1844, the first successful telegraph message was sent
This marked the 
start of modern telecommunications
The completion of the transatlantic cable in 1858 
connected Europe and North America for the first time.
1876: Telephone
Alexander Graham Bell
The first words spoken on the telephone were "Mr. Watson, come here—I want to see you"
The first coast-to-coast telephone call was a conference call on 
January 25, 1915, 
that connected dignitaries from New York City, Boston, and San Francisco with President Woodrow Wilson at the White House
