overexcitabilities?
Overexcitabilities 
Overexcitabilities are inborn intensities indicating a heightened ability to respond to stimuli. Found to a greater degree in creative and gifted individuals.

Dabrowski's Theory of
There are five areas of overexcitability...
EMOTIONAL OVEREXCITABILITY
heightened, intense feelings, extremes of complex emotions
strong affective expression
a remarkable capacity for deep relationships
they might appear overly dramatic or out for attention
but they are often misunderstood
PSYCHOMOTOR OVEREXCITABILITY
“capacity for being active and energetic” 
moving for movement's sake
the kid who can’t stand still in line

or sit quietly waiting for directions 
or stop talking or wiggling...
SENSUAL (Sensory)  OVEREXCITABILITY
receive more input from their senses than expected
Acute sensitivity to sound, food textures and odors are often present
some may seek sensory input...

...while others withdraw from stimulation
overload can come from clothing tags, classroom noise, or smells from the cafeteria 
INTELLECTUAL OVEREXCITABILITY
a deep need to seek understanding 
and truth, 
to gain knowledge, analyze and synthesize
to gain knowledge, analyze and synthesize
frequently love theory, thinking about thinking, and moral thinking

might appear critical and impatient
IMAGINATIONAL OVEREXCITABILITY
Fueled by creativity...daydreams, doodles, or otherwise occupies their mind
may tell stories that sort of seem like lies (but aren't really)
prone to hyperbole, elaborate metaphors, and zoning out
often in their own world of vivid dreams, fantasy play, and imaginary friends
Not everyone with
overexcitabilities is gifted
Not all gifted people 
have overexcitabilities
It is also easy to misdiagnose
 an overexcitability 
as a disability.
