Why Is This Important

Starr Carter is continuously switching between two worlds. The hood, a mostly black neighborhood where she lives and the wealthy, mostly white prep school that she goes to.

The balance is upset once when she witnesses the shooting of her childhood best friend, Khalil, at the hands of a police officer all because he was reaching for his hairbrush.

Why This Is Important Cont.
 Starr must advocate and decide what's right and what matters to her. However, Starr’s friend Khalil is painted as a drug dealer who deserved his fate while the cop is described as justified and admirable.

As of October 2018, 362 black individuals were shot due to police shootings?

The almost too familiar feel of being punished for the color of your skin. The classic example of doing any given ordinary action while being black. The same can be said for Khalil as he was murdered for simply reaching for a hairbrush. An eerily common occurrence showcasing the current race relations in America.
