“Cognitive delays are when a person has mental limitations in skills such as communicating, taking care of themselves, and social skills. Signs of cognitive delays vary but let's talk about what some of these signs look like so we can be on the lookout to ensure their health and safety. You may notice that they tend to act infantile at times. This can come across as though they are much younger than they really are due to their actions. They may also have trouble thinking logically. This may be obvious to you, but sometimes these things can go unnoticed by parents. They may also not be as adventurous as their peers. This stems from the lack of curiosity they have. You may also notice their awareness is off. If they started to sit, crawl, and walk later than normal, this could be a sign of a cognitive delay. Your child may also have trouble communicating with others. You may have also noticed learning difficulties since they started school.”

“The causes of cognitive delays vary, just like their symptoms. Before I begin discussing the possible causes, I need you to understand that in most cases, it is not possible to identify a clear cause. The causes that every parent is the most worried about are the causes they could have created. Again, most of the time, a cause can not be made clear. Shaken baby syndrome is one possible cause of a cognitive delay. It is very unlikely in your case though. You would have seen the signs long before their current age. Some other causes include seizure disorders, genetic conditions, pregnancy conditions, birth conditions, health conditions, chromosomal disorders, or a possible brain injury due to an infection.”
“Cognitive delays can typically be diagnosed when professionals evaluate cognitive delays by looking at two factors: intellectual functioning and adaptive functioning. During an intellectual functioning evaluation, the child is put under a test to measure their ability to learn, solve problems, and understand the world. This is also known as an IQ test. During an adaptive functioning evaluation, the child is put under a test to determine their ability to develop skills that are needed to live independently in the world.”
“Delays in motor skills are another common delay in early school-aged children. Delays in motor skills can show up in many signs. Some of these include the inability to properly move large muscle groups in arms and legs and in smaller muscle groups such as hands. Infants with this delay may have trouble crawling, rolling, over, standing, etc. Older children would appear to be clumsy and or have trouble walking up and down stairs. You may notice this type of delay if they also have a hard time holding onto smaller objects or maybe they have a hard time doing simple tasks like brushing their teeth or tying their shoes.”
“There can be many different causes for delays in motor skills. Some of these include achondroplasia, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, ataxia, cognitive delays, myopathy, problems with vision, and Spina Bifida. Motor skill delays can often be diagnosed by a series of tests. Diagnostic tests may be administered to evaluate the child with motor delays. This can include a brain MRI for children with high muscle tone children and a measuring serum creatine kinase concentration for children with decreased muscle tones.”
“Speech delays are another common delay in early school-aged children. Speech delays are receptive language disorders where your child may have some difficulty understanding words or concepts. In some cases, this will make it harder for them to identify colors, body shapes, or body parts. Expressive language disorders are where your child has a reduced or limited vocabulary. This can present itself in your child talking slowly. Speech Delays, like other delays, have many different causes.”

“Speech delays can be caused by brain damage, genetic syndromes, hearing loss, or lack of stimulation, but in most cases the cause is unknown. Speech delays are typically diagnosed after a thorough medical evaluation is done by your child's doctor. Your child's doctor will then proceed to refer you to a speech-language pathologist. The speech-language pathologist will then perform a comprehensive assessment of your child’s receptive and expressive language. This will determine if your child has a language delay. The exam will mainly focus on different forms of communication including verbal and nonverbal.”
