Yes, that's question.
Do you not understand the core characteristic of shelve and ASRS as storage equipment?
Don't worry, let me explain to you.
1, Both ASRS and shelve are storage equipment. 
2, Shelve can store similar or different type of item together.
Core characteristics of ASRS and shelve
3, Shelve need labor to collect or store item.

4, ASRS can store and retrieve unit load or individual item.
5, ASRS consists of a variety of computer-controlled systems for automatically placing and retrieving loads from defined storage locations.

Let's look at this picture, this is shelves. You can see a worker 
is collecting item from shelves to his cart, and also 
you can see there are many types of items on shelves.

This is ASRS,  it is controlled by computer. It is operating with 
stacker crane to carry or retrieve good from storage location.
This is terminal where operator can give instruction to ASRS.

Now you got all my idea, let me test you by two questions.

First, shelve and ASRS which equipment cost is higher?
I think ASRS is more expensive than shelve.
Shelve is usually made of wood or iron. 
And its material handing equipment such as cart, is also very cheap.

ASRS need to work with Precision engineered racking, stacker crane ,dock. 
Hence, ASRS’s equipment cost is higher than shelves.
Every part of ASRS is very expensive!

ASRS allows for more storage space due to high-density storage, narrower aisles, 
I think ASRS can store more items.

However, shelve needs worker to carry or store items on it,  so the height of
and stacker crane can put unit load into the high level so that the volume of inventory will be more.
shelve will be limited, which means that shelve storage capacity is inferior to ASRS.
