EASTER RISING
breakdown of an iconic event in irish history

Dublin, Ireland
Beginning of Easter Week
On monday morning, about 1200 armed members of the Republican forces occupy strategic locations in downtown Dublin

Their goal is to put an end to British rule on Irish soil
Who are the rebels?
IRB - Irish Republican Brotherhood
The Irish Citizen Army, lead by James Connolly
Cumann na mBan (all-female)
The Irish Volunteers, lead by Patrick Pearse
The rebels set up headquarters at the General Post Office in O'Connell Street
and read out the Proclamation of the Irish Republic
The rebellion lasts six days

on the second day, martial law is declared by the British military

British troops are sent to root out the rebels from the occupied spots with field artillery, incendiary shells and heavy machine guns
On Saturday, April 29, the GPO headquarters are lost 
The rising is over
Pearse issues an order of unconditional surrender to all rebel forces
The aftermath
almost 500 victims
54% civilians
2600 wounded
2200 civilians
most of dublin is in ruins
british General Maxwell issues arrest warrants for more than 3500 people
Most of them are subsequently released
A series of courts-martial begins on May 2

187 people are tried at Richmond Barracks, Dublin

among them, all  7 of the signatories of the Proclamation of independence

The executions take place immediately, between may 3 and 12

The men are killed by firing squad, at the Kilmainham Gaol

at first, many Dubliners were bewildered by the RISING outbreak

There was a lot of hostility towards the Rebels: the civilian population was not prepared for a revolution

Additionally, the Rising resulted in a great deal of death and destruction

Murderers!
However, as the executions go on, the Irish public grows increasingly hostile towards the British and sympathetic to the rebel cause

Already during the month of May, songs and ballads are composed to celebrate the rising

The Rising causes widespread sentiments
 hostility against foreign power

patriotism and nationalistic pride

the nobility of martyrdom

the legitimacy of armed revolt

for the freedom of the irish republic

The myth of the easter Rising is born
the Rising is the first step on the path towards Irish independence and the rebels are its heroes and martyrs
Celebrating the memory
public commemorations
for about fifty years, An annual commemorative military parade used to be held each year on Easter Sunday
In the south, both the state and the hard-line Republicans vied for control of the Rising’s memory
In Northern Ireland commemorating the Rising was illegal and every year was the scene of confrontations between Republicans and the police
The parades culminated in a huge national celebration on the 50th anniversary of the Rising in 1966

The Rising is also vital to the sense of political justification of today's IRA
past and present overlap
The violence of 1916 is no different from the one then taking place in the streets of Belfast
With the outbreak of the Troubles (1969) the government and the media began to revise the country's militant past
eventually, The Irish government discontinues its annual parade in Dublin
In 1976 commemorations were proscribed
10.000 Dubliners attend the ceremony anyway
1990: Thanks to the Peace Process, the official view of the Rising improves once again

What about today?
The graves in Dublin's former military prison of Arbour Hill where the rebels were buried and the Kilmainham Gaol where they were executed are national monuments
Murals in republican areas of Belfast and other towns celebrate the actions of Pearse and his comrades
at school, children study and celebrate the rising
however, in the words of the irish times:
“Easter 1916 was a different world. It must neither intimidate nor antagonise us in today’s Ireland”
