REMEMBER TO LISTEN TO THE CURATOR, MS. LOCKLEAR AND ASK QUESTIONS THAT CAN HELP YOUR WONDERING. 
Ms. Locklear is taking you through the entrance hallway of the permanent indigenous art collection.

She asks you to pay close attention to Pitaloosie Saila's drawings as they line the hallway beautifully. 
Saila's work is described as a preservation effort of traditonal Inuit ways of life.

Saila's work demonstrates traditional inuit drawing techniques and typically depicts women of a strong will and independence. 
Now that you have navigated through Saila's work you can ask yourself some questions.

Who are the powerful women in your life?

What contributions to our land and our society did women make then and continue to make today?
Ms. Locklear walks you through the first room of the exhibition. You come across a vibrant painting created by Norval Morrisseau.
Morrisseau's work discusses ideas animals as a protector of the land and the people who share it.

Thunderbird, 1977

He focuses on the role of thunderbirds, that are known to be the caretakers of the earth. Thunderbirds are used for rejuvenating and cleansing the earth. 
Morrisseau transforms his spirit into art with the use of different colour combinations.

How can you transform your own spirit into something tangible?

Look around outside your school and help us determine which animals are native to your land.
Your teacher notices a series of photographs across the room. They are both shocking and beautiful. 
Shelly Niro, captures the ideas of colonialism and creates a discussion for young people to understand the hidden past of indigenous peoples of Canada.

These photographs demonstrate the difficult truths that indigenous peoples have been living with. They provoke thought and conversation over reconiliation. 
Shelly Niro uses her art to give others a voice.

How can we be social activists in our own communities?

How can activism be beneficial to our environments and our communties?
Your teacher asks Ms. Locklear to show you a sculpture that critqiues colonialism and the British way of life. 
Rebecca Belmore's work uses mixed media to describe the tensions of her point of view 
(Anishinaabekwe).

Belmore's work teaches us how to use found objects and aspects of nature to represent our colonial history.
What are some conflicts that have occured between thee indigenous peoples and the european cultures that came to Canada?

What conflicts have arised with how people connect with the environment (the land)?

How can we use the Land Acknowledgement to discover new ways to re-connect and emerse with our land?
