The Dark Reality About Indigenous People's Health

Indigenous people face poor health at substantially higher rates compared to most non-Indigenous people for many health issues such as:
stunted growth

high infant/ young child mortality

hypertension

social problems

shortened life expectancy

obesity

cardiovascular disease

suicide and homicide

interpersonal violence

high maternal morbidity/mortality

chronic kidney disease and more..

55% of Métis and 56% of First Nations people are more likely to be diagnosed with

1 or more chronic condition

in comparison to 48% of non-Indigenous people.

Indigenous people have double the chance to be in contact with second-hand smoke at home.
Some chronic conditions like respiratory problems are more common for Indigenous people in relation to smoking.

In fact, 21% of all Inuit Nunangat deaths are related to smoking, which contributes to their lower life expectancy.
Indigenous adults have higher rates of obesity...

22% for Métis
26% for First Nations/Inuit
in comparison to 16% for non-Indigenous adults.
Indigenous children (12-17) also have higher rates of obesity...

in comparison to 19% for non-Indigenous children.

and Inuit communities in Arctic Canada have a suicide rate that is 10 times Canada’s general average.

Inuit people have 270 times higher tuberculosis rates compared to non-Indigenous Canadians

Why is it difficult for Indigenous people to get access to health care?

The area that you live in contributes to your access to health care.

The challenges are most severe in...

remote communities

rural communities

northern communities

as it is difficult to employ and maintain health professionals, causing many communities to lack medical employees.

Excessively high transportation fees are another barrier which can lead to unmet health needs
Although urban areas have more access to a variety of healthcare services, Indigenous people may experience difficulties such as:

racism / discrimination

culturally unsafe care

long wait lists

Currently the barriers to improving Indigenous health include obstacles like:

social

environmental

economic

geographic
cultural

and financial factors

What can we do to help improve the health of Indigenous people?

RAISE AWARNESS

There are ways that the Government of Canada can help to improve the health outcomes of Indigenous people by:

- Working alongside Indigenous people and provincial/territorial partners to support their goals, like lowering  tuberculosis for Inuit Nunangut

- Giving adequate/sustainable health resources in every community

- Improving the satisfaction/value of care

- Ensuring that Indigenous children obtain essential medical care in a timely way

Recovering/renewing their way of knowing, cultures, and traditions can have a positive impact on their well-being.
