The Benefits and Contraindictions of Physical Activity when Battling Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC)

What Is NSCLC?
Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer is the most common type of lung cancer. It is generally a slow growing and moving cancer. This type of lung cancer is most commonly found in the epithelial cells lining on the inner lining of the lungs.

The Importance of Participating in Physical Activity
Individuals diagnosed or newly cured from NSCLC, physical activity is vital for improving their overall well being and gaining their strength back. Physical activity helps manage symptoms and potential impacts of long-term outcomes. Physical activity gives a boost not only physically but also psychologically and gives individuals a sense of normalcy and control. 
Physical: Symptoms may include, shortness of breath, chest pain, weight loss, fatigue, cough/wheezing, swelling in face or neck, increased risk of infections like pneumonia and bronchitis. Individuals may also experience loss of muscle strength due to treatment.
Psychological: May experience, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, mood swings, fear/worry, and sleep disorders such as insomnia. All symptoms can lead to lower quality of life.
Physical and Psychological effects of NSCLC 
Improved fatigue, better quality of life, increased muscle strength, reduced anxiety and depression, improved breathing and cardiovascular fitness are all a few benefits seen when and individual with NSCLC participate in physical activity. Physical activity has proven to boost serotonin which then can improve ones mood, self-esteem, and motivation. This then has a positive effect on an individuals mental well-being by reducing stress, anxiety, and depression, therefore bettering their quality of life. 
During treatments and recovering from NSCLC its important to build strength and endurance to help maintain mobility, performing daily activities, and fatigue. PA can build cardiovascular and respitory systems, making it eaier to handle demands of everyday activities and even help with tolerence to treatments. Simply by improving lung capacity and endurance.
Benefits of Physical Activity
Along with all the benefits of participating in physical activity there are some important contraindiction's to keep in mind.
Contraindiction's to Think About
For Someone fighting and recovering from NSCLC may include, severe anemia, compromised immune system (avoid public gyms), unstable/weaker bones or spinal matastses, cardiovascular and respiartory limitations (Chemo induced left-ventricalar dysfunction).
Any physical activity should be cleared by individuals medical team and an exercise specialist. A plan should be talked about that meets needs and limitaions while also being enjoyable. 
Even though physical activity is not directly linked as a cure for Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, physical activity is proven to help with treatment effects and the overall effect of the cancer on an individuals body. Physical activity has been proven to reduce negaitive effects treatments have on lungs and can also reduce pain caused by treatment.
There are so many benefits. Physical activity but contraindictions can cause more damage if not aware. Individuals need to consult their medical team and specialist to talk about goals, needs, and limitations. A plan should then be build for the individual meeting each need and working towards goals. Physical activity should also be fun and exciting creating motivation and giving a sense of control and normacy.
