Defining Fake News
- According to Collins Dictionary, fake news is 'information disseminated under the guise of news reporting'
- However, there have been many debates on the definition of fake news, and Baker (2018) points out the struggle to define it. She states that the problem is, you cannot regulate something you don't understand
What research tells us...
- Buzzfeed research found that fake election news outperformed engagement on Facebook compared to the most popular election news stories from a combination of 19 major news sources
-This tells us that fake news have a massive impact on our society (specifically politics)...
In support of this...
• A new study found that fake news spread faster than the truth on social media 
•	Researchers suggested that the true stories took six times as long as to reach 1,500 people on Twitter than fake news
(Polianskaya, 2018)

More statistics...
A recent survey conducted by Ipsos Public Affairs and BuzzFeed News found that fake news headlines about the election fooled American adults about 75% of the time.
Researchers at Stanford University found that students from middle school through college are not proficient at evaluating information credibility.

After collecting over 7,800 responses across 12 states, they discovered the following shortfalls:

•	Inability to distinguish sponsored content from actual news. 
•	Tendency to accept what they see in photographs without verification or attribution. 
•	Failure to detect or suspect potential bias.
