What are the penalties if someone commits infringement of copyright/ plagiarism?
Under Sec. 217 of RA 8293
the criminal penalties for copyright infringement are:
For 1st offense :

Imprisonment of one (1) year to three (3) years plus a fine ranging from Fifty thousand pesos (P50,000) to One hundred fifty thousand pesos (P150,000)

For 2nd offense:

Imprisonment of three (3) years and one (1) day to six (6) years plus a fine ranging from One hundred fifty thousand pesos (P150,000) to Five hundred thousand pesos (P500,000).

3rd and subsequent offenses :

Imprisonment of six (6) years and one (1) day to nine (9) years plus a fine ranging from Five hundred thousand pesos (P500,000) to One million five hundred thousand pesos (P1,500,000)

If you’re caught plagiarizing, you can be punished by your school, fired from your job, or even have your career ruined. 
But what about legal consequences? Is it possible for a plagiarist to get sued or, even worse, face criminal action? The answer is that, it depends on the nature of the plagiarism.
Why does plagiarism matter?

Plagiarism is a breach of academic integrity. It is a principle of intellectual honesty that all members of the academic community should acknowledge their debt to the originators of the ideas, words, and data which form the basis for their own work.
However, there are some works that are not protected by the copyright law. These works are covered by Public Domain and Fair Use.
