Example 2
A rectangular garden has an area of 40 sq.m  .Its length is the sum of a number and 5 and its width is a sum of a number and 2. Find its length and width.
Solution
Let    x + 5 =  Length 
          x + 2 =  Width
          40     =   Area
Now,  substitute the value of positive x = 3
Length = x + 5
               = 3 + 5
length= 8m
Width     = x + 2
                = 3 + 2
Width     = 5m
Hence, the length of the garden is 8m and its width is 5m.

Let's try example 3
The length of a drawing book is 2 inches less than 3 times the width. If the area is 65 sq. inches. find its length and width.
Solution:
Let (x)  = Width
3x - 2    = Length
65         = Area
Now, substitute the value of positive x = 5  
Width   = x = 5
Length = 3x - 2
              = 3(5) - 2 
 Length= 13
Hence, the length of the drawing book is 13 in. and its width is 5 in.
