Jerry hustled, placing the cardboard cutouts three seats apart to emphasize the importance of social distancing during the recent pandemic.
Hey, Jerry, are those things holding up okay?
Yeah, some of the cutouts are difficult standing up today for some reason, but I got ‘em.
Come over here for a minute when you’re done with ‘em…
Jerry finished and walked over to Gary who was giving new orders to some of the crew. He could tell that it was going to be another short day again.
We’re going to have to let you go…
But I really need this job, and…
I’m sorry, man. Cutbacks…
I’ll do any kind of work…
I’m sorry…
Lost in his thoughts, Jerry walked slowly toward the exit. He did not know how he was going to tell his wife. She had just lost her job two weeks ago and was currently depending on him to get her prescription on his way home today.
As the day wore on, Gary double-checked all of the cutout people in the stands, making sure they were placed appropriately and standing upright. He sat down at the bottom of the steps as his crew finished their tasks.
Hey, boss, are you alright?
Are you sure?
Yeah. Just a stiff back. You can call it a day. The game will start in two hours…
I’ll finish up…
He decided to call his wife when he thought that he heard voices coming from the back.
The rest of the crew left and Gary walked into the back storage area. He started to inspect the remaining cutouts to see which ones he wanted to keep. He quickly tore through them, tossing the undesirable ones to his left. He carried all of the disposed cutouts to the garbage.
Hey! Who’s back there? Danny? Jamie? We’re done for the day…
He shrugged and picked up his can of root beer to take a sip of it.
Flat.
A cutout toppled forward, making a loud slap against the cement floor when it hit.
Damn it! Scared the crap out of me…
He walked over to pick it up. As he reached down for it, he thought that he heard voices again.
HEY! Is that someone with a radio back there? We’re done today…
As he tried to walk, his legs stiffened. He could feel is heartbeat slowing down as the air escaped his lungs. He tried calling out but only gasped. It felt as if hours elapsed, as he stood there frozen.
Spooky. I always feel boxed in back here…
Hey, Gary! Are you in here?
Manuel looked around, shut off the lights, and then closed the door.
The next morning, Jerry waited outside of the service entrance for the crew to arrive. He wanted to make his case with Gary one more time.
Eight o’clock came and went so he decided to go inside and find him. He figured they would be preparing for that night’s game.
Hey, Jerry, I heard what happened and I wanted to let you know that he gave you a paper-thin excuse for letting you go, man … you’re a stand-up guy! 
I mean, you bring an atmosphere to this place like one of those kids in high school that sets off a smoke bomb in the hallway, causing a disruption and all, but at least no one gets hurt, and we get to go home early.
Yeah, I just wanted to talk to Gary to see if I could re-apply for another position.
Maria walked by and greeted them. Manuel frowned and rolled his eyes at Jerry.
She’s always chewing something and breathing at me through her nose…
Yeah, sure, man. I haven’t seen him yet. Marshall is filling in for him today. He’s out there on the court.
As Jerry walked across the court, he saw some of the crew propping up the cutout people in their designated places.
Hi, sir, my name’s…
You’re Jerry, right?
Yes, sir…
We could use an extra hand setting up for tonight’s game. I know that Gary had let you go, but I’m rehiring you…
A look of shock shot across his face, and his heart pounded as he headed toward storage to help the crew with setting up the cutouts.
As he walked by the first row of cutouts, one of them stopped him in his tracks. It reminded him of Gary.
Hey, man, so you’re back on the team!
Yeah, I guess so. Doesn’t this cutout look like Gary…
Hey, yeah, maybe a little … nah, not really, though.
What’s this one doing in the front row anyway? He looks like he’s afraid or constipated or something.
Here … let’s take it to the back and pull out another one that looks like they’re having fun…
