We will be continuing on our journey in Competency Based Grading. 
Competency Based Education 101
Somersworth Middle School believes that the purpose of assessing is to communicate student achievement. 
Competency Based Grading is a  more specific way to do this!
Competency means a measure of student'S ability & Skills.  
Each SUBJECT AREA WIll NOW HAVE 4 Scores OF ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT, and 3 Scores of Work Habits! 
That is 7 Performance indicators instead of one traditional Grade or %

This is so much more information on your student!
Meet the Performance Indicators
 Meets the expected rigor of the Competency and demonstrates the required pieces of the standard. 
ME= Meets Expectations
This is where we want students to be, as it shows they are meeting the grade-level standard.
Meet the Performance Indicators
 Almost meets the expected rigor of the Competency and is close to demonstrating the required pieces of the standard. 
AE= Approaching Expectations
This is when   students are almost meeting the grade-level standard, and are missing only 1-2 components.

Partially meets the competency or the rate of progressing toward meeting the expectation is being monitored because learning may not be at a rate sufficient to meet end-of-year targets.
MP= Making Progress
This is where students fall when they are working towards getting to grade level.

Needs to make significant progress toward meeting the expectations toward the competency; learning is not progressing at a rate to meet end-of-year target. 
BP= Beginning Progress
This is where students fall when they are just starting, but need to "make more progress".

Evidence to assess competency is missing or incomplete.
IE= Insufficient Evidence
Why Might This Happen:
* Excessive Absences
* Refusal to Work
*Plans Not Followed
When students are given an IE it is to communicate that they are missing critical evidence, and a plan is needed to get them back on track!
Meet the Performance Indicators
Student has demonstrated exemplary work that goes                                        or shows a more rigorous, in-depth understanding or application than required.
EE= Exceeds Expectations 
above grade level
This is more than just doing more- It is when students not only "Meet Expectations" but also demonstrate a deeper understanding.
The Performance Indicators will communicate a clearer message of what your child can do, and where they are in their learning process.

We will also be reporting your students Work Habits in each class. 
These are the non-academic skills we want all  students to demonstrate in class.
Expectations: Students ability to be a Safe, Respectful, Responsible & Cooperative classroom community member.

Engagement: Students ability to be a willing, creative, curious and self advocating learner.

Effort: Students ability to demonstrate initiative, persistence, and participation in the classroom.
This Means instead of one grade for each class, you will see seven performance indicators
This communicates the areas of competency that the student is on target and the areas they are working on. 
Monitoring your student's progress
In PowerSchool you will see 2 different types of assignments under the different competency Areas.
Formative Assessments
Summative Assessments
These are the classwork, ELS, and activities that check for student understanding. 
These help prepare students for summative assessments and give them feedback.  
These are the assessments that measure students competency. These are the assessments that count toward your students final performance indicator in each competency area.

This is a lot of information, and a change; together we will work to make the transition as easy for students as possible.
