This is going to be an
amazing project by Jordan Odil!
According to the U.S. Department of Education (as cited in Morrow & Gambrell, 2015) evidence based literacy instruction consists of students' strength and needs in the five pillars of reading, instruction that follows a systematic sequence, and engaging, relevant materials. Instruction should also be progress monitored to determine effectiveness.   (US Department of Education as cited in Gambrell & Morrow pg. 8, 2015).

As a Kindergarten teacher, I believe my students should be engaged, and excited about learning. Furthermore, I believe they should be taught according to their developmental and academic needs. My project is derived from my yearning for evidence-based literacy practices at my current school. Our literacy curriculum is scripted, not differentiated, and as is, does not meet the needs of some of my learners. Many of the district’s curriculum practices  overlook what is “evidence-based” academic instruction and what's best for students. 
I have had many conversations with my colleagues regarding our scripted curriculum.  Many of them have repeatedly expressed concerns regarding materials. Teachers are not allowed flexibility in the implementation of the curriculum.. . 
Background
Background
Curriculum materials are inaccessible to much of our .student population and not engaging to student As a result, many lacked enthusiasm reading. Many of our students struggle with reading by the time they reach third grade (testing).  I blame part of this on the lack of review and intervention resources in the curriculum. 
Student Perceptions 
Gambrell and Morrow (2015) state that the TEACHER is the critical and most important factor in the  classroom (p. 26).  Researcher Michael Pressley states on the following slide, the characteristics of highly effective teachers.

-Motivate, encourage, and maintain positive relationships with students.

Currently Literacy Practices in District 
Students
aren't engaged  in literacy instruction. The curriculum does not take into account remediation or struggling readers.

My current situation.....
Sequence does not allow time for review. Pacing is too fast and does not take into account for students who are struggling.

The National Institute  for Literacy states that phonics instruction should be systematic and explicit. There should be a logical, clear instructional sequence. Students have many opportunities to practice what they are learning ( p.14). 
Best Practice
In chapter 4 of Best Practices in Literacy Instruction it states that “there is no single method or approach to teaching language arts that is universally effective with all young children. In contrast, teachers need to possess a broad repertoire of theories and instructional strategies, and draw from this repertoire to address students’ individual needs” (Gambrell & Morrow, 2015, p. 88).
