What is the R-word?
The R-word is a euphemism for the word retard. In 1941, the psychologist Edgar Doll introduced mental retardation as a medical term to refer to people with intellectual disabilities.

Why is the use of the R-word not appropriate?

Using the R-word is dehumanizing,hurtful and offensive and spreads hate.

Using the R-word ignores individuality and shows disrespect to people with intellectual disabilities.

Using the R-word sustains stigmatization, discrimination and exclusion in society.

It is hurtful
In 2010, the American President Barack Obama signed "Rosa's Law" which changed the term mental retardation to intellectual disability in the federal law.

Inspired by 9-year-old Rosa Marcellino, this law was a milestone to promote inclusion and person-first language for people with intellectual disabilities.
Rosa's Law 
A study of 50 million social posts in 2018 in the U.S.A. revealed that over two-thirds of the posts were negative about people with intellectual disabilities and 29 million contained the R-word.
The R-word and Social Media 
The R-word is a derogatory term whether used online or offline 
Research in the U.S.A. reveals that:

70% of social media posts are negative towards people with intellectual disabilties.

60% of the negative posts contain the R-word.

What Teachers need to know about intellectual disabilities 
Intellectual disabilities are significant limitations in a student's intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior.
Intellectual disabilities are manifested during developmental period and before age 18.
Intellectual disabilties can be classified into mild,moderate,severe or profound based on the severity.
Intellectual disabilities can be intermittent, limited, extensive or pervasive based on the intensity of student support needed.
How can teachers support students with intellectual disabilities in the general education classroom?
1.Use clear and detailed instructions
2.Present content in multimodal ways
3.Adjust instructional pace
4.Break longer tasks to shorter ones
5.Teach organizational skills
6.Use collaborative learning 
7.Use assistive technology

How can teachers help their students respond respectfully to somebody who uses the R-word?

Teach Response Strategies
1.This word is hurtful. Do you think you could use a different word?
2.Have you ever thought that this word can stigmatize? 
3.Think that every time you use this world discrimination continues.
4.You may not be aware but there is a campaign called "Spread the word to end the word" that you can join to support inclusion. 
Practice Inclusion:
