Hi, Dr. Jackson!
It's me, Tracey Simpson-Gardner
I have learned a lot in my doctoral classes this semester. Here are just a few things I have learned from the activities, classroom discussions and experiences from our class this semester.
Relator
Maximizer
Strategic
Focus

I’ve learned more about who I am as person and how this affects my leadership. My areas of strength from the Gallup assessment were Relator, Maximizer, Strategic and Focus. These results came as no surprise to me. I value trust in relationships and once broken, there can be no relationship. As a Maximizer, I look for strengths in individuals and take delight in helping them to develop their strengths while seeking out opportunities for them to showcase their talents.
I’ve also learned so much about the Superintendency, the Superintendent’s cabinet and the school board and more about how these entities function, independently and collectively. The more I learned, the more I wanted to know.
At this stage in my career, I truly believe that my purpose is to work at the school level. Advocating for teachers and serving them each day is the work that feeds my Soul. It is where I believe I have been called to have the greatest impact in this season. However, what I learned about the Superintendency from class has helped me to see the bigger picture. It has broadened my perspective and afforded me richer context and deeper understanding.  
I better appreciate the work of the Superintendent and those who work closely with them. The shadowing activity, school board meeting, information provided by guest presenters and exploring the many case studies and our class discussions were all valuable activities that have forever changed my outlook.
How can I increase my impact?
What I learned the most is how important it is to learn office politics. This is my 3rd year out of the classroom. As a classroom teacher, I had very few issues. My data was good. I had good relationships with students and minimal complaints from parents. I never wrote office referrals and I hardly ever complained to admin. I stayed clear of workplace drama and was a team player. I took advantage of opportunities to lead for my personal growth and worked closely with school leadership on initiatives.
Moving into an instructional leadership position has been more challenging for me. I see changes that need to be made but I don’t always know how to effectively communicate my thoughts and ideas without coming across as a “know it all” or critical. Because I am new to my position and my workplace, I sometimes feel as if I don’t have a voice and that my opinions are not valued. 
What I have learned from class discussions is that it can take time to be a change agent. I am learning when to be quiet and when to assert my ideas. This is not easy for me. I am challenging myself to continue to grow in this area. Because without a job, there can be no influence.  And no influence means no impact. That was undoubtedly my greatest lesson this semester!
Overall, I have really enjoyed learning from you and others in class. The knowledge gained from our class experiences will prepare me for future leadership opportunities by opening my heart and mind to other career possibilities. While I still do not believe the Office of Superintendency is for me personally, I am interested in learning more about opportunities that may be available to me upon completion of the doctoral program. 
I have so much more respect for School Superintendents and would certainly consider moving into a support role at the district level to help lighten their loads.

We all have been chosen to do such a great work. Indisputably, we have one of the most challenging careers in the world. It is complicated by policies and politics and things that don’t always make sense. There are many hurdles and obstacles that we have to overcome. But we also have one of the best jobs in the world.
