The Spinal Cord Clinic presents....
Before your visit
The clinic nurse will call you & inquire about your general concerns. If you need an interpreter for your visit, inform the SCC team at this time.

The program coordinator will call you & inform you of your visit date.
You will receive an automated appointment reminder.
4-6 WEEKS BEFORE
1 WEEK BEFORE

2-3 DAYS BEFORE
Before your visit
If your appointment is VIRTUAL, you will receive the appointment link 1 day beforehand via email.

DAY of visit
Give yourself adequate time to find parking.
Arrive at the clinic 10-15 minutes before your appointment.
THINGS TO BRING: 
- Prescriptions 
- List of medications
- Any equipment & braces
PROGRAM COORDINATOR
IN THE CLINIC WAITING ROOM...
They will update all contact info & sign off on consent forms for release of information.

They may take your height, weight, blood pressure.
Finally, you will be moved to an examination room.
CHECK IN 
You may be asked to get medical imaging at this point (ultrasounds, x-rays, etc.).

Various team members will come into the exam room to interview you & your child. 
You will see some or all of our different team members depending on the needs of your child & his/her diagnosis.
They may perform various physical examinations.
Let's meet the team!
clinic nurse
They will check in with you & ask about general concerns, or any new concerns that weren't discussed over the phone.
Pediatrician/pediatric physiatrist
They will inquire about:

Your child's general health (eating, sleeping, pain, immunizations, medications).

Questions specific to the spinal cord lesions (bowel & bladder function, numbness, weakness & headaches).

Mood, learning, development, & schooling, as this can be influenced by your child's spinal cord condition.

They will perform a general examination.

urology team
They will ask you specific questions regarding your bladder function. 
They will suggest additional treatments or tests to make sure that your kidneys remain healthy & you can manage bladder emptying.
Neurosurgical team
The neurosurgeon will evaluate for any neurological changes that can occur as your child is growing & may require additional surgery.
They will ensure that...
VP shunts are working correctly.
There is no entrapment or tethering of the spinal cord.
They will ultimately be able to do surgery if needed.
Orthopedic surgeon
Often works together with our physiotherapist in evaluating your legs, hips, & spine, as they are all affected by the spinal cord condition.
May order x-rays and MRIs, as well as recommend additional treatment or surgeries.
Also prescribes splints & gait aids, such as walkers, wheelchairs, or crutches.
occupational therapist
They will help with equipment needs.
They will assist with overall eating & hand function.

They will screen your general development.
Social worker
They provide social and emotional support for your family and your child.
They provide psychosocial assessments and supportive counseling.
They act as a liaison officer to connect you with community resources, funding, and practical support.
End of visit
At the end of your clinic visit, we will discuss your child's health & healthcare needs during a team conference to ensure that we make a comprehensive care plan for you & your child.
This plan will be summarized in a multidisciplinary report which you can access online through MyEHealth.
End of visit
CHECK IN with the clinic nurse to ensure that all scheduled clinicians were seen, then CHECK OUT with our program coordinator at the front.
If you require proof of attendance, please speak to the program coordinator before you leave.
If you have any questions/concerns between your visits, please email/call the program coordinator.
Our clinic nurse will contact you about specific medical concerns.
Additional info
Our clinic runs from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm on Thursdays.
You may be asked to do additional tests either the day before the clinic or the afternoon of your visit day.
