The Start screen on Windows phones is based on tiles.Instead of displaying icons as a reference to apps, tiles are apps that can display dynamic information and allow interaction right on the start screen.

A tile can display live information, such as text messages, news or photos. If the user needs more information, the tile can be tapped, and the app is expanded to take up the entire screen. Tiles are squares or rectangles. The user can choose how big a tile can be. This is helpful as it allows the user to create a visual sense of priority among tiles.

Pinning to Start
The Windows Phone allows users to pin content to the Start screen for easy access. Users can pin practically any content available in the phone including apps, contacts, maps, videos or websites. Pinned content will appear as tiles on Start. To pin to Start, look for the pinning icon or, in the case of pinning an app to start, follow these steps:

Tap and hold the app until the pin to start bar appears.
Tap the pin to start bar. 
To unpin from Start, tap and hold the item and then tap the unpin icon.

Back - Returns to the previous screen. Continuing to press the Back button navigates to each previous screen until the Start screen is displayed. Tap and hold the back button to access App Switcher, a list of recently used apps.
Start - Returns to the Start screen.
Search - Tap the Search button to start a Bing search from anywhere on the phone. Tap and hold the Search button to access Cortana, Windows Phone digital assistant

Tap and hold the tile you want to move until it pops into                                 the foreground.
When you are done moving tiles, press the Start button.

Push the tile where you want it to go.

Tap and hold the tile you want to change to a different size.
Tap the resize icon until the tile changes to the size you want.
When you are done, press the Start button.

On Start screen, tap and hold a tile.
Move the tile on top of another tile until the folder pops into the foreground.
To name the folder, tap Name folder, give it a name, and then tap Enter.

To get to any of the apps in the folder, just tap the folder to open it, and then tap the app you want.

To close the folder, tap the tile for the folder that appears above it.
To Open Apps in a Folder

Step 1 : Tap the folder to open it.

Step 2 : Tap and hold the tile you want to remove from the folder.

Step 3 : Push the tile to anywhere on Start.
