Social Media: Developmental Impact in Females

This report analyzes common concerns regarding the dangers of social media. An emphasis on the social media platforms Instagram and Snapchat will be shown due to the popularity of these sites, especially among females. In an age where excessive time spent on social media is normalized and glorified, the intent of this report is to spread awareness of the detriment it possesses towards one’s attention span as well as a females view of perfectionism and conforming to beauty standards. This report aims to shed light on the heavily debated topic of the link between social media use and a decrease in attention span. This report also briefs over the potential of cyberbullying and the need to conform to societal beauty standards for females. Overall, the results of our findings were partially predictable and partly not. While we did see that cyberbullying is apparent on social media sites, we also found that in studies, there was no significant correlation between attention span loss and use of social media. We did however find that there is a link between the amount of time spent on social media and one’s need for perfectionism. Overall, there are negative and positive aspects to social media, and it is important to base our opinions regarding what dangers it poses on facts
