Types Of Fermenter
The main function of a fermenter is to provide a controlled environment for the growth of microorganisms or animal cells, to obtain a desired product.
Three main types of fermenter
Stirred Tank Fermenter
Bubble Column Fermenter
Loop Fermenter
Stirred tank fermenter
 Functions: homogenization, suspension of solids, dispersion of gas-liquid mixtures, aeration of liquid and heat exchange .
provide with a baffle and rotating stirrer
 The stirred-tank fermenter is the most widely used design in industrial fermentation .

It can be employed for both aerobic or anaerobic fermentation.

• Bubble column fermenter is the simplest fermenter which is usually composed of a long cylindrical vessel with a sparging device at the bottom 
• The fermenter contents are mixed by the rising bubbles which also provide the oxygen needs of the cells 
• They do not require agitation hence there are no shafts, impellers or blades
• energy efficient 
Loop Fermenter
Loop Fermenter
• A loop fermenter is a tank or column fermenter with a liquid circulation loop, which can be a central draft tube or external loop 
• it can be classified into three different types: airlift, stirred loop, and jet loop 
• The air-lift fermenters do not have mechanical agitation systems (motor, shaft, impeller blades) but contents are agitated by injecting air from the bottom. 
• The air serves two purposes: It provides the oxygen needed for the growth of the microorganisms and the rising air creates natural circulation of the liquid in the fermenter through the loop 
• Lastly, a heat exchanger is installed in the loop to cool the liquid medium 
• Medium and air are introduced into the upper and lower parts of the loop.
