WHAT is IEEE 802.11
IEEE 802.11 is part of the IEEE 802 set of LAN protocols, and specifies the set of media access control (MAC) and physical layer (PHY) protocols for implementing wireless local area network (WLAN) Wi-Fi computer communication in various frequencies, including but not limited to 2.4, 5, and 60 GHz frequency bands.

The first 802.11 specifications included two spread spectrum methods in the unlicensed 2.4 GHz band: 1 Mbps frequency hopping (FHSS) and 1 and 2 Mbps direct sequence (DSSS). 
11b (1999) - Slow Speed 
Using DSSS and the 2.4 GHz band, 802.11b boosted speed to 11 Mbps while retaining the slower DSSS modes to accommodate weak signals.

Using orthogonal FDM (OFDM), 802.11a transmits up to 54 Mbps. It uses the 5 GHz band and is not compatible with 11b.

11g (2003) - Medium Speed
Using orthogonal FDM (OFDM) transmission, 11g increased speed in the 2.4 GHz band to 54 Mbps. 
11n (2009) - High Speed

802.11ax operates in both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands with data rates in the multi-gigabit range (see 802.11ax). 
802.11n uses multiple antennas for speeds up to 450 Mbps. 
11ax (2019) - Highest Speed
11ac (2012) - High Speed
802.11ac operates in the 5 GHz band with data rates into the gigabit range (see 802.11ac). 
•The security services are provided largely by the Wired Equivalent Privacy(WEP)protocol.

•WEP was part of the original IEEE 802.11 wireless standard.(builtin security)

•WEP protocol is used only to protect link level data during wireless transmission between client sand the access points.

•WEP provides security for the wireless portion of the connection, but doesn't provide end‐to‐end security.

- Silicon:
 - On February 25, 2019, Qualcomm announced the WCN3998, a 2x2 802.11ax chipset for smartphones and mobile devices. 
-On August 15, 2017, Broadcom announced their 6th Generation of Wi-Fi products with 802.11ax support. The BCM43684 and BCM43694 are 4×4 MIMO chips with full 802.11ax support,while the BCM4375 provides 2 × 2 MIMO 802.11ax along with Bluetooth 5.0.
 - Access points: On July 17, 2018, Ruckus Networks announced an IoT- and LTE-ready 802.11AX (Wi-Fi 6) access point, also known as the R730. The R730 shipped in September 2018. - Devices: in Samsung galaxy S10 
- Routers: On August 30, 2017, Asus announced the first 802.11ax router. The RT-AX88U uses Broadcom silicon, has 4×4 MIMO in both bands and achieves a maximum of 1148 Mbit/s on 2.4 GHz and 4804 Mbit/s on 5 GHz.
