Understanding Counterclaim and Rebuttal 
in Argument Essays
What is a counterclaim?
A counterclaim is when you acknowledge the opposing view to your argument.
What is a rebuttal?
A rebuttal is when you reaffirm your argument in relation to the counterclaim.
You are trying to convince your family that you need a new pair of shoes. 
Now, think about this example with me. 
Think about why your family might say you don't need the shoes.
Let's say they just bought you a pair of shoes last week. 
That's your idea for a counter-argument!
Maybe the shoes they bought last week were running shoes, and now you need cleats for football or soccer. 
This is your rebuttal!
When you have your ideas ready, it is time to fit the ideas into your thesis, conclusion, and essay body.
