My name is
Today we will explore a student who is in one of the self-contained classrooms I visit. He is learning how to keep his hands to himself when he feels excited, upset, or wants to get someones attention.
Why is keeping hands to myself important
Keeping my hands to myself helps everyone feel safe and happy.
When I don’t touch others, I show that I respect their space.
It helps me make and keep friends.
What does it mean to keep hands to myself
I don’t hit, push, or grab others.I don’t poke, pinch, or touch other people’s bodies or things.I keep my hands to myself unless it’s okay to touch (like a high five or handshake).
When I Forget
Sometimes I might forget and touch someone.
That’s okay—I can stop, say “I’m sorry,” and try again.
Everyone makes mistakes, and I can learn from them.
What I Can Do Instead
If I want to say hello, I can wave or say “hi.”If I feel excited, I can clap my hands or squeeze a fidget toy.If I’m mad or upset, I can take deep breaths or ask an adult for help.
Asking First
If I want to give a hug or a high five, I can ask first.

It’s okay if the other person says no.
I can say, “Okay!” and do something else with my hands.
My Personal Space
Everyone has personal space. That means a small bubble around their body. I stay an arm’s length away unless it’s okay to be closer.
