What is Plessy vs. ferguson
This is where the “Separate but equal”  began. 
Plessy Vs. Ferguson was a court case that was tried in attempts to prove that the Separate Car Act was a violation to the 13th and 14th amendment

1887-1892
*  Florida law made it a requirement for railroads to have separate accommodations for each race
*  Black Citizens protested this law known as Separate Car Act (1890) when it was proposed in Louisiana. This law was passed despite having 16 Black Legislatives in Louisiana state of assembly.
*   There was a $25 fine or a 20-day sentencing in jail if citizens didn’t comply
*  
June 7, 1892
A group of citizens formed ’Citizen’ committee to protest the Separate Car Act in Louisiana and test its unconstitutionality. A man by the name of Homer Plessy decided to test this law because it had a big fallacy, especially since it wouldn’t apply to people of mixed decent. Plessy was 7/8 white, and he bought a train ticket and sat in a white compartment. The conductor went against this, and Plessy was arrested and charged for violating the Separate Car Act.
Court battle April 13, 1892
*  ‘Citizen Committee to Test the Constitutionality of the Separate Car Act’ got Albion W. Tourgee to be their lawyer. 
*  Tourgee argued that the law was unconstitutional and the “separate but equal” went against everything the people fought for prior in t he Civil Rights Act of 1875.
*  Ferguson Ruled against the statement so Plessy went to appeal the case in the Supreme Court
*  Unfortunately, on May 18th 1896, the court decided that the Law was constitutional and did not violate the 13th and 14th amendment because it “imposes no badge of slavery or involuntary servitude”
*  “We consider the underlying fallacy of the plaintiff’s argument to consist in the assumption that the enforced separation of the two races stamps the colored race with a badge of inferiority. If this be so, it is not by reason of anything found in the act, but solely because the colored race chooses to put that construction upon it”
*  
Currently
*  After the court battle, segregation continued to impact African American citizens all over the united states for another 68 years. There were many people that would fight for their rights, like Rosa Parks and  Martin Luther King Jr. which eventually lead to the Civil Rights act of 1964.
*  Today we can say that the United States has come a long way since 1890s, but there is still a lot of work to be done.
