In the early 1600s, life was perilous for tribes near Werowocomoco, including Pocahontas' people. English colonizers targeted women and children, with plans to kidnap Pocahontas due to her status as the chief's daughter. At just 15 or 16, she was abducted, forced to give up her first child, and her husband, Kocoum, was killed. Captain Samuel Argall orchestrated her kidnapping, using her as leverage against the chief, falsely promising her return while threatening the village.
Pocahontas was kidnapped and taken to England, where she was reportedly abused by her captors and gave birth to a son, Thomas. Converted to Christianity and renamed Rebecca, she was used as a political symbol of peace between settlers and Indigenous groups. Though she confronted John Smith about betraying her people, she longed to return home. In 1617, before her departure, she fell ill and died under mysterious circumstances. Buried in Gravesend, England, against her family's wishes, her death devastated her father, who died from grief less than a year later.
