Hi! My name is Alexa Tyler and for my Doctorate in Educational Technology Program I will be researching Culturally Responsive Pedagogy & Technology: Innovative Teaching for Native American Students.
I have taught at a tribal college for the last two years as
an adjunct faculty member. during this time i have really gotten to know my students who are primary native american. i have taken it upon myself to research the culture to make my own teaching more mindful and respectful.
as my teaching time increased i wanted to implement more educational technology as well as propose online and hybrid versions of my courses. this suggestion was turned down for fear that the native american culture and teaching style would not be maintained or included in course design and delivery.
Towards the end of my master of arts in educational technology program i started to research culturally responsive pedagogy as well as current practices for teaching native american students, and found the latter to be lacking in significant research. this gave me an idea! Pursue my doctorate and contribute research
in this area!
I knew that I wanted to not only develop best practice for implementing technology and teaching to native american student for myself, but for all educators alike! However, with such a large topic of study I got to work on selecting my top three questions/problems that i wanted to resolve during my doctoral program.
The Big Three
#1 How can storytelling be effectively implemented in online courses to simulate traditional Native American teaching?
#2 how Does historical trauma effect Native American students' motivation in online classrooms and how can this be improved?
#3. How can instructional designers collaborate with subject matter experts on implementing culturally responsive pedagogy within Tribal Colleges and Universities when designing materials and assessments?
I can't wait to see where my research takes me!
