Well, do not start with a big passage first. Here is how you should begin the teaching process.

8 Steps To Introduce Reading Comprehension to Kids
Start with a single object
One picture and questions
1. What is the colour of the bird?
1. White     2. Blue     3. Brown
2.  What is the bird doing?
3. What is in the bird's mouth?
1. Jumping     2. Swimming     3. Flying
1. Cherry     2. Leaves     3. Worms
Start with a single object
Questions without choices

Use different colour codes for different wh-questions to teach initially

You can even begin with an image and yes/no questions first.

Initially do not stress on grammar. Even if your kid starts with just phrases, encourge him.
