The Impact of Preventative Initiatives on the Mental Health and Wellbeing of Danish High School Students
InternationalWomen’s Day
One in seven adolescents (10-19) worldwide suffers from mental health issues. In Denmark, 15% of children and adolescents receive a mental health diagnosis before turning 18.
We’re studying the impact of current wellbeing programs that exist for Danish high school students.

We’re also connecting with youth through conversation (dialog circles) to understand what really helps them feel supported and more in control.
Each RA created their own research questions to focus on during the semester:
How does early alcohol exposure affect the well-being of Danish youth? How do cultural norms, access, and parental attitudes influence alcohol use, and what insights can guide preventative measures?
How can peer programs and the concepts of “desire for change” and “resistance to change” from motivational approaches (MI) be applied in developing preventative initiatives targeting alcohol use among Danish youth?
Mental health struggles are common, but there are mixed experiences with existing resources.
People are more open about mental health, especially on social media, but stigma still exists.
Exposure begins around age 16 due to easy access, school parties, and feeling “behind”.
Parents control their kids’ exposure and intake. Social belonging induces subtle peer pressure.
Inclusive or non-drinking settings, harm reduction, and close-age peer mentors can help.
