about how scientists have been trying to find signs of life using characteristics found in rocks formed billions of years ago
Archean eon: before 2.5 billion years ago

Akilia, Greenland
 A rock found was determined to be 3.83 billion years old.

Scientist Stephen Mojzsis thought that the rock contained evidence for life, since it was enriched with Carbon 12. However, other scientists had different explanations.

Isua, Greenland
Rosing detected a light carbon signature in rocks that did not go through as many chemical changes as in Akilia.
Because of this, these rocks proved to be better evidence for life.
Earth and beyond
Scientists are still unsure of how to distinguish between biological and non-biological signs of life.
Many believe that we must come up with clear criteria before trying to determine life on Mars.
My thoughts
It amazes me how scientists are able to determine whether life existed long ago based on artifacts left in rocks. The article taught me that every form of life, no matter how small, leaves behind an imprint, one that we can track.
