Invasive Species 
are non-native organisms to an environment 
that cause environmental or economic harm

What are invasive species?
There are invasive species all over the world. 
In almost all the continents and in every ocean.          
Although the total number of invasive species in Texas has not been calculated, there are at least a minimum of:
 -79 plants (terrestrial & aquatic)
- 10  mammals 
- 4    birds 
- 7    fish 
- 11    insects 
- 11    mollusks & crustaceans

These account only for the well established non-native species currently causing disorder in the state. 
What is so troubling about invasives is their ability to out-compete and/or completely displace the native species of the area.
Invasive species can be introduced by 
human travel, pet trade, imported products or biological control.
Impacts on the environment
- cause instability
- out-compete native species
- decrease biodiversity
- lead to species extinction
- threaten human health
- change soil properties
- be vectors for pathogens

The Giant ramshorn snail (                                              ) is a hostile scavenger causing problems for the aquatic vegetation of the San Marcos and Comal Rivers including the endangered and highly endemic wild rice.

$ 1 - 120 billion dollars in the  U. S. in
management & control

Texas Produces
All greatly affected by invasive species

- $3.35 billion in crops 
- $8.59 billion in livestock 
- $2.87 billion in sport fishing
- leads the nation in shrimp 
   production and much more...

So imagine the costs Texas face due to Invasives!!!

Example...
Wild Hogs cause more than $400 million dollars of damages annually. 
In 1998 Red Fire Ants caused $530 million dollars in damages to the Dallas- FT worth area.

Texas is home to more than 340 endemic species not found any where else in the world!!
In the United States
Texas is the 2nd state with the most biodiversity
& 3rd with its number of endemic species.
