What is code-switching?
Code-switching is... 
Use of elements from two or more languages in the same utterance or conversation 
Mixed elements may be phonological, lexical, or morphosyntatic 
There are two different types of  code-switching

Intrasentential
02
Intersentential
Intrasentential
- Switching within one sentence

-For example, " Yo quiero comprar a car "
Why do we code-switch?
Reasons for Code-Switching
To utilize a word or phrase that is more relevant or comes to mind first
Assert Identity
Promote in-group inclusion or exclusion
Emphasize a concept in discourse
It is important to note that...
- Nearly all bilingual children code-switch

-The ability of young children adhering to one language in conversation is constrained by their degree of proficiency in that language

-Code-switching levels decrease overtime 
Why is code-switching important to clincians?

Clinicians should gain understanding of the models of language choice and setting expectations for code-switching

Clinicians should not label code-switching as a language disorder unless there is additional evidence

Clinicians should be aware of the child's:
-Language pattern of the community or home 
-Lexical or grammatical gap filling
And that's code-switching!
