PAL: Precautionary Allergen Labeling
is used by manufacturers to inform consumers if there is a possibility that an allergen that is not a part of the final product, may be present in the food
Examples of PALs Include:
Why are PALs a problem?
2020 Study:
82.1% of all food allergic reactions among children and adults were unintentional and cross-contamination was the most commonly cited reason for these reactions.
*  Cross-contamination
*  24.1% in children
*  32.2% in adults
*  9.9% of intentional exposures
*  47.8% of adults decided to take the risk and eat food containing the allergen
2021 Study:
2 experiments: first compares foods with no stated allergen versus allergen as a stated ingredient versus a precautionary allergen label, second experiment compares three variations of PAL
*  Risk assessment for PAL varied and was judged as higher by non‐allergic than allergic participants
*  Both allergic and non‐allergic consumers judged all forms of allergy information to be unclear
*  Less than 40% of participants judged PAL information to be comprehensible
$19 billion per year
