Spain, Age of Exploration
Christopher Columbus
Early life
Christopher Columbus was born on 1541 in Genoa, Italy
As a teenager, Christopher got a job on a merchant ship
The ship sank and Christopher landed on Lisbon, Portugal

Spice Trade
The journey from Europe to Asia was both long and aggravating
The people of Portugal eventually found another way to India by going south of Africa
The Suez Canal was also being blocked by the Ottomans, and they didn't allow the Europeans to cross

Motivation
Christopher then had the idea that if they sailed westward, they could reach Asia that way
The Portuguese didn't really like his idea, and it was rejected
Christopher then decided to go to Spain, and asked King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella if he could sail, and they approved
Spain, Religion
Spain was a Roman Catholic country, and still is today
King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella had defeated the last Muslim stronghold in 1492, and they set their sights on conquering other lands
Voyage 1
Christopher set off on his voyage on 08/02/1492, and on 10/12/1492 Christopher then landed on the Bahamian island that is now known as San Salvador.
Later, he set out to conquer other Caribbean islands, like Cuba and Hispañola, and along the way, he met some of the Natives who were friendly with them.
There was also tons of gold there.
Return Home
Christopher Columbus returned home, and there he was praised for what he found on the Americas
Christopher still thought that he made it to Asia, and called the land that he discovered "The Indies" and the people that lived there Indians.
Later, and Italian navigator, Amerigo Vespucci, confirmed that the land that Christopher discovered was undiscovered before, and the Americas were named after him.
Voyage 2
Preparation
Ferdinand and Isabella were so happy with Christopher, that they organized a 2nd voyage
It was much larger and consisted of 17 ships and more than 1,200 men
Voyage 2
Findings
The second voyage started a year after the first
There, they discovered Puerto Rico and Jamaica
Christopher also created the first permanent Spanish city called La Isabela in honor of the queen
Treaty of Tordesillas
Portugal wasn't happy that Spain had all of the Americas to themselves
Spain wanted to secure their colonies on the Americas
The Pope then drew a line saying that everything west of it belonged to Spain, and everything east of it belonged to Portugal
The line was eventually moved westwards for an unknown reason
Christopher Columbus voyaged two more times, from 1498-1500, and 1500-1502, and later died
Mesoamerican Natives
Explorers known as the Conquistadors set out to conquer new lands
The living condition of the natives slowly deteriorated, and the Europeans brought many diseases along with them, killing a lot of them
The Fall of the Aztecs
The Conquistadors hear of the rich Aztec Empire and set out to meet it
The Aztecs greet them with a warm welcome in 1519 and bring them to their capital Tenochtitlan
Tension later broke out, and since the Spanish had more advanced weapons and a smallpox broke out, the Aztecs were defeated and the city was renamed into Mexico City
Ferdinand Magellan
Straight of Magellan
Ferdinand Magellan, not King Ferdinand, still wanted to find a way to Asia via traveling west, and eventually discovered a straight in southern Argentina
The straight was then named the Straight of Magellan after him
Ferdinand  Magellan
The Philippines
After crossing the straight, he went towards Asia and believed that it wouldn't take that long to reach the coast, when it actually took a long time
Magellan eventually made it to a Filipino island called Cebu, and he wanted to convert everyone there to Christianity
The people there asked for help and wanted to defeat the Mactanese 
He thought it would be easy dubs, but it wasn't, and he actually died in battle, and his discovery led to the conquest of the Philippines
Impact (Spain)
Spain was successfully able to open up another route to India
Spain expanded a lot in terms of land
The Spanish learned about different foods like bananas and pineapples
They learned of the "New World"
They accomplished traveling the whole word
Impact (Natives)
Many were forced to convert to Christianity
Many were enslaved and forced to work in mines or plantations
Natives, and especially the Taino, population were destroyed when Europeans imported hard work and disease
Independence
The land that Spain conquered was known as "New Spain", but eventually people started declaring their independence much later in years
