Creative Writing

OBJECTIVES:
a. define what is drama;
b. recognize the various elements of drama; and
c. perform the learning task applying the various elements of drama.
DRAMA
Story enacted on stage before an audience.
Comes from the Greek word "dran" meaning "to act or to do".
Written by a person called "Playwright".
Technically piece of writing.
Performed for theaters, television, films and also radios.
Exclusively presented through an elements called "dialogue".
VARIOUS ELEMENTS OF DRAMA
PLOT
Divided the plot into 5 stages.
 Refers to the series of events that takes place.
Gustav Freytag, a German writer and playwright created a plot pyramid during Mid-19th Century and this pyramid is called "Freytag's Pyramid."
INTRODUCTION PLOT 
- it covers both exposition part and exciting force.
RISING MOVEMENT
- follows once the exciting force is set.
CLIMAX
- reach the peak of action.
FALLING ACTION
- is either the protagonist continue to either devolve or improve, it will eventually lead up to the "force to final suspence".
DENOUEMENT
- "the end of it all".
CHARACTER
Divided into different types of characters:
 Interacts with each other in an environment (setting) creating a sense of motion in the storyline called actions. 
Protagonist Antagonist

PROTAGONIST
- Usually labelled as the "hero" ot "good" guy.
ANTAGONIST
- Opposite of the protagonist and usually labelled as "evil", "villain" or "bad".
Flat
- With little to no complex emotions, motivations, or personality.
Round
- Describe any characters whose depth and complexities and apparent throughout the story.
CONFLICT
Is very important because if there is no conflict, there would be no movement and no narrative drive.
 Is a situation or meeting between characters that results in challenge and opposition. 
Divided into six types of conflicts:
Man vs. ManMan vs. NatureMan vs. Self
Man vs. SupernaturalMan vs. SocietyMan vs. Technology
MAN VS. MAN
- Where two people who are in conflict.
MAN VS. NATURE
- Include the forces of the nature as the very source of conflict of the story.
MAN VS. SELF
- A character struggle free himself/herself from a psychological dilemma.
- A character is prosecuted by the society.
MAN VS. SUPERNATURAL
- When a character was haunted by unexplained phenomenon.
MAN VS. SOCIETY
MAN VS. TECHNOLOGY
- For example, the scientist trying to stop a rogue robot intention in destroying planet earth.
SUSPENSE
Used to build interest and excitement on the part of the audience.
Refers to the feeling of uncertainty as to the outcome of an action.
LANGUAGE
Presented through dialogue.
Refers to the particular manner of verbal expressions and diction or style of writing or the speech that suggest.
Helps to convey clues tocharacters feelings, personalities, backgrounds, and even shift in personalities.
STYLE/STYLIZATION
Shaping of dramatic materials, settings or costumes for audiences to understand more about the play.
DIALOGUE
Helps to identify one character from the other since it has the potential to reveal the personalities, potentials and feelings.
Characters in drama interact and communicate.
For non-verbal expresions, dialogues in the form of expressions.
THEME
Refers the basic idea that the playwright would like the audience to know and feel.
