My name is Ashleigh
Activity Overview
Play based activity: Seek, Find, Solve
Age range: 5 years of age
Focus Maths concept: Addition/ Subtraction 
EYLF Curriculum link: Outcome 4. 
and im here to share with you a play-based learning experience
that will help us with our ability to understand mathematics and be able to confidently apply the skills needed while being able to work with numbers and understand mathematical problems.
Play-based learning is defined as...
'a context for learning through which children organise and make sense of their social worlds, as they actively engage with people, objects and representations' (EYLF, 2009, p. 46)
As the EYLF also suggests,  play is fundamental as it allows children to be able to explore ideas, solve problems, make connections and engage with others (DEEWR, 2009, p. 9). 
The activity we will be implementing is called...
SEEK, FIND, SOLVE
(thegeniusofplay.org, 2017). And is suitable for a k-5 age range. 
In this image we see cards and clues placed around the room for the children to investigate
(The French American School of Tampa Bay, 2017)

Steps for SEEK,FIND,SOLVE
Step 1. Provide each team with a starting clue
Step 2. Have all clues and answers around the room
Step 3. Team writing

Step 1-
Provide each team with their first clue (all different so there is no following).

Example clue-
Sam has 10 pieces of gum to share with his friends. There wasn’t enough gum for all of his friends, so he went to the store to get 3 more pieces of gum. How many pieces of gum does Sam have now?
Answer- 13
This Number would be hidden around the room to find

Step 2- Each answer should lead to the next question, you will want to place the answers facing out so it is easier to locate. The next clue could be on the opposite side to lead them to the next clue and equation. All working out should be written in each childs maths book to demonstate their problem solving and correct addition and subtraction.

Step 3-  Once all students and teams have completed the scavnger hunt, they will be reqired to write their own word problem in their teams using the answers they have found on the hunt and share it with the class; completing each teams maths story.

SEEK, FIND, SOLVE task is going to provide the teacher with an opportunity to enhance the students Addition and Subtraction skills...
This activity corresponds with the Early Years Learning framework; OUTCOME 4: Children are confident and involved learners
Outcome 4 of the EYLF outlines the skills children will be able to replicate in the classroom which consists of; develop a range of skills and processes such as problem solving, inquiry, experimentation, hypothesising, researching and investigating
This activity can be supported by Jean Piaget's theory of Constructivism. 
Constructivism is defined as "a learning theory found in psychology which explains how people might acquire knowledge and learn. It therefore has direct application to education. The theory suggests that humans construct knowledge and meaning from their experiences (The University of Sydney, 2018)
