Today we are going to learn about: 
Cross-linguistic influence and Code-switching
What is cross-linguistic influence? 
Cross-linguistic influence refers to the phenomenon where knowledge of one language affects the learning or use of another language.
Examples of cross-linguistic influence
One example found in Odlin (1989) is that Spanish speakers learning English may say, “I have 20 years” instead of “I am 20 years old,” reflecting the structure of Spanish (tener 20 años).
Examples of cross-linguistic influence
A research by Goto (1971) shows another example of cross-linguistic influence. This example says Japanese speakers learning English may struggle with “r” and “l” sounds, saying “lice” instead of “rice,” due to the lack of a clear distinction between these sounds in Japanese.

The process of switching between two or more languages or dialects in a single sentence, phrase, or discourse is known as code-switching. Bilingual or multilingual speakers frequently do this, switching between languages with ease according to the situation, subject, or target audience.
Types of Code-switching
Intrasentential Code-switching
People who are bilingual or multilingual frequently engage in this kind of code-switching, when they use words, phrases, or expressions from several languages in a single speech.
“I’m going to the mercado to buy some groceries.”
An example of Intrasentential Code-Switching is:
Types of Code-switching
2. Intersentential Code-switching
Is when a speaker switches between two or more languages at the sentence level, it's known as code-switching. This indicates that the speaker begins a sentence or clause in one language and then moves on to the next sentence or clause in a different language.
An example of intersentential Code-Switching is:
“I went to the store yesterday. Luego fui a la casa de mi amigo,”

“I don’t know where she went. Quizás fue al supermercado.”

Bilingual speakers can show their cultural identity through code-switching. Some speakers may find that specific languages carry emotional weight or connotations for certain topicsSpeakers may switch languages based on their audience.By using language in a playful way, code-switching enables speakers to be imaginative or funny.
