Drake Volunteers!
Volunteering is going to "look" a little different this year, and the Office of Community Engaged Learning is here with 5 pieces of advice to help you be successful.

Take safety precautions & be flexible in light of Covid-19
It is our shared responsibility to support and protect the health and wellbeing of all members of the community

Follow the guidelines of the Drake Community Health Compact

Follow any additional safety precautions or policies from the community organization

Follow physical distancing guidelines

Wear a mask, it helps protect the
community from Covid-19

Do not volunteer if you are experiencing any symptoms

Fill a community-identified need
Visit www.drake.edu/volunteer to see a list of volunteer opportunities through partnerships with Drake
or contact our office at servicelearning@drake.edu

Talk to community partners in advance to see what they need; don't make assumptions.

Example : Imagine you thought it would be a great idea to get donations of bikes for youth at the local after-school program.

You excitedly go deliver them and realize none of the bikes are the right sizes for the youth there, and the youth leave feeling disappointed.
How could this have been avoided?

Keep in mind that non-profits may have other priorities right now due to the demands of Covid-19.

Don't be discouraged if they are unable to partner at this time. 
Once you've identified the partner you are going to work with, participate in an orientation & training.

Learn about the history and mission of the organization, review policies and requirements, and develop shared expectations.

Keep in mind that social change does not always happen off campus and there are many strategies for creating change
Some direct service activities can be done remotely. You can help with:

-Research

-Social Media, websites, brochures

-Collecting and analyzing data

Reflect on your experience
Reflection is a key part of service-learning.

Use the "What, So What, Now What" model - what did you participate in, why did it matter, and what will you do differently as a result?
