Humor

ScriptWriting mastery - free online course from PowToon on Explainer video making

Objective:

Learn how to satiate your scripts with humor! There are many approaches that we will discuss in this section of the course.

What you need to have ready before you begin:

* Think of a funny anecdotal joke relevant to your topic

* Search for some funny industry-specific jokes

* Figure out what tone best compliments your message

* Have some tea or coffee! Whatever you think will tickle your funny bone!

In reality, not all of us are funny. We have to face facts here. Even if you don’t have a natural talent for humor, however, there is still hope for you! If you want to use humor to entertain your audience, but don’t quite know where to start, search for jokes online that relate to your topic. You can also search other videos on YouTube, or any other video hosting site, that focus on the same subject to garner some good ideas for your video. By viewing the work of others you can get some great ideas for appropriate tones and styles. Another great piece of advice is to use animated characters. With video software, such as PowToon for example, cute and entertaining characters can help add humor and elicit laughs from your viewers.

Ways to add humor to your script:?

* Industry specific jokes

* Anecdotal jokes

* Quoting a famous person

Everyone has stories that are, in fact, quite funny when told at the right time and in the right context. When incorporating humor into your scripts you can focus yourself in the spotlight, or on a specific character in your script. Here is an example of a humorous video with the spotlight centered on characters in the script.

When you take real situations from your life experience, and exaggerate them to make a point (with supporting images too), then you can really win with humor. In this TED Talk, right from the get go, you can see that the presenter is setting a humorous tome, using himself as his life experiences as the object of humor. Take a look at his brilliance!

Another tip that could help the less humor inclined is to search the web for funny, famous quotes, and include them in your script as you see fit.

Funny quote examples:?

“If you see a bandwagon, it’s too late”- James Goldsmith

“Why join the navy if you can be a pirate”- Steve Jobs

“A successful man is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks others have thrown at him”- David Brinkley

“There are two kinds of people, those who do the work, and those who take the credit. Try to be in the first group; there is less competition there”- Indira Gandhi

“In a restaurant choose a table near a waiter”- Jewish Proverb

“If you can count your money, you don’t have a billion dollars”- J. Paul Getty

Now that you have a better idea of how to incorporate humor into your scripts, continue on to the last day of this course: Call to Actions
