Remembering Pearl: A Journey Through Therapeutic Communication. All names have been changed for confidentiality (NMC, 2019).
Meet Pearl. She is living with dementia. She does not speak much. She is now 89 years old
When I first met Pearl, I was at a care home unit in England, where I was completing my placement.
Pearl had been living in another supported living home in England  before arriving at the care home unit, where I was completing my placement. 
While she was there, Pearl's needs increased significantly.
Sometimes, she was found wandering in the streets and became aggressive when the police tried to help her return home.
She was now referred to a dementia unit, where I was completing my placement.
The care home l was on placement reported that her needs had increased, and she had to be moved to another care home unit.

She often asks for her mother .
Pearl tried to leave the ward, distressed by memories of her mother.
She becomes angry when assisted to the toilet and when getting dressed. 
She could no longer eat or drink much.
I observed (OpenStax, 2025) that staff were making choices for Pearl regarding her clothes, food, and drinks because of her complex behavior .
Recognizing what Pearl is going through, I decided to understand who Pearl is before communicating with her (NHS,  2025)
I decided to communicate with her daughter, who visits once a month to know more about Pearl (NHS,  2022)
She described Pearl`s life before dementia as a warm and kind  person. She had been a teacher for 40 years, who was cherished by both students and colleagues.
Pear`s life revolved around gardening, finding joy among flowers, and her fondest memories were family picnics
