How Does Learning Happen? Ontario’s Pedagogy for the Early Years
This guide supports early childhood educators and others in fostering children's:
 learning, and 
development.

It emphasizes creating a sense of:
belonging, 
inclusion, and 
positive relationships with children and families.

It outlines the 4 key learning foundations and provides strategies to nurture them, 
aims to cultivate lifelong learning and 
well-being through rich, meaningful experiences.

Well- Being,
Expression 
The four foundations to learning are:
Every child deserves to feel a sense of belonging in all aspects of their life, be it at home, school, or within the community. As educators, it's our responsibility to foster this belonging by cultivating a warm and nurturing environment where everyone feels welcome, irrespective of cultural or religious backgrounds.

Personalize desks or a board with:
-  each child's name, and            - a picture representing something they like.
Establish a birthday tree to celebrate all children's birthdays, 
- including those during summer break, 
- before or after the special day,

Maintain regular communication with families through:
- weekly newsletters,
- detailing children's learning experiences.
Respect cultural and religious backgrounds by:
-      actively seeking knowledge about them, and
-      ensuring inclusivity in classroom practices.

Building relationships with my fellow educators provides me;
 - A supportive environment, and
- I will feel valued and included.

Acknowledge my contributions/accomplishments 
- Reinforces, and 
- reminds me of my importance to the team.

Well - Being
Well-being encompasses ensuring a healthy environment, focusing on physical health, mental health, and overall wellness. It addresses self-care, self-awareness, self-regulation skills, and the significance of nutritious foods.

    Offer nutritious meals and snacks for balanced health.
   
 Respond to children's emotional needs by:
- checking in when they're upset, and 
-providing tools for self-soothing..

Check in with families if they seem upset during :
- drop-off or pick-up, and
- offering support.

Regularly ask families if they:      - feel supported and 
- inquire about their needs regarding their children.

Prioritize self-care: 
Making time for activities that recharge me, such as exercise, or hobbies, 
This supports my overall well-being.
Cultivate a positive mindset: 
Practicing gratitude and mindfulness techniques,
helps me maintain a positive outlook.

Engagement
Engagement ensures we establish an environment where children can actively participate and respond to learning. As educators, we cultivate an atmosphere that encourages exploration and embraces diversity, enabling children to learn through their senses, bodies, and minds.

Provide varied textured materials for children's exploration.

Ensure the environment supports engagement and request changes if needed for better support.

Collaborate with families to develop individualized learning plans for child.

Encourage families to create engaging materials like Play-Doh  to support learning at home.

Set personal goals:
Establish clear objectives for my professional growth keeps me motivated, and
 engaged.

Exploring new teaching strategies or activities keeps:
 my work dynamic and exciting, 
fostering a deeper level of engagement.

Expression
Expression is about ensuring all children can communicate effectively, regardless of barriers. Educators must create an inclusive environment with diverse methods like AAC, communication cards, Sign Language, Braille, and more.

Create a necklace with key communication pictures for easy reference. 
Commit to learning more sign language to better support children who use it.

Understand each child's communication style from families.

Create a personalized plan for communication support.

Create opportunities for self-reflection, or artistic expression to help process  experiences and emotions. 
Have open and honest communication channels with supervisors or peers .
