Inclusion of LGBTQ+ in Science Fiction

Why is it Important?
Golden Age 
When science fiction was introduced, the field was primarily white cis-male readers and writers.
How were minorities represented?
For the most part they weren't.

Once minority groups emerged in science fiction, it was often in attempts to socially subjugate and discriminate them.
What happens when you exclude other groups from the genre? 
?
The harm done by the exclusion of LGBTQ+ identifying individuals does not allow members to feel accepted or an integral part of society. 
This issue however is mitigated by the integration of LGBTQ+ characters in science fiction.

LGBTQ+ Science Fiction 
-Songmaster: Orson Scott Card
 - (Card,1980)
In this novel, the society depicted is one where homosexuality is accepted, common, and where sexual orientation is not expected to be restrictively male to female and vice versa. Throughout the novel, Card illustrates homosexuality as a natural facet of human identity and relation; one that is a valid form of expression. 
LGBTQ+ Science Fiction

- All you Zombies - : Robert A. Heinlein
  - (Heinlein, 1959)
This short story challenges conventional gender roles and societal expectations, with the use of a protagonist who overcomes such hardships regarding identity. The addition of diverse identities in science fiction is a means to allow readers to feel empathy and a sense of understanding with individuals who experience hardships due to a conflict with their own identity and belonging.

-The Fifth Sacred Thing: Starhawk
   - (Starhawk, 1993)
The designation of LGBTQ+ individuals in this novel strive further than the inclusion of their sexual orientation and identity as all characters are brought to life as intricate individuals, holding the same significance as their cis heterosexual companions. Starhawk drives the message of what civilization could conquer once a limitless domain is able to accept and value individuals, regardless of their gender and sexuality.

-Space Raptor Butt Invasion: Chuck Tingle
   -(Tingle, 2015)
This sensationalistic novel is well known as the story that wrote histroy. This was Chuck's way of refuting the Sad Puppy campaign, a far right-winged group that pushed the narrative that SF is a predominately cis white male genre. With the inclusion of homosexual relations, fluidity, and non-heteronormative recognition, the win against the Sad Puppies succeeded to reject the exclusionary vision and conservative view of the science fiction genre and was able to promote the celebration of what makes a human, human. 
Why is this important?

The inclusion of diverse sexual orientation and gender identity is integral as it gives rise to socio-cultural issues, promotes a feeling of understanding, and provides an outlet for representation of marginalized groups.
