What Is A Gyroscope?

A gyroscope is a device consisting of a wheel or disk mounted so that it can spin rapidly about an axis which is itself free to alter in direction.

What is the Gyroscope Made Out Of?
Aluminum is a preferred metal, because of its expansion and strength characteristics, but more sophisticated gyroscopes are made of titanium. Metal is purchased in bulk as bar stock and machined.

In 1852, a french physicist Leon Foucault created a precision gyroscope and gave the instrument its name. made up of Greek words meaning essentially, "rotation watcher."

About The Inventer
Leon Foucault also known as Jean Foucault was born in September 18, 1819 in Paris. He is known for a lot of things, like the Foucault Pendulum and the Eddy Current, but he is also famously known for the gyroscope. 
The gyroscope was one of my best inventions! 
What Is The Gyroscope Used For? 
The gyroscope is used for navigation systems. Gyroscopes are also used in gyrotheodolites to maintain direction in in tunnel mining. 
How Is The Gyroscope Used For  Navigation? 
A rotation of the gyroscope generates a coriolis force that is acting on the mass, which results in a motion in a different direction. The motion in this direction is measured by electrodes and represents the rate of the turn. 
The Gyroscope Frame
Gyroscope Frame: In a gyroscope there is 2 or 3 gimbals, in a case of 2 gimbals the outer gimbal(gyroscope frame) is mounted so as to pivot about an axis in its own plane determined by the support. 
Gimbal: A gimbal is a pivoting mount that allows an object to rotate around a single axis.

Spin Axis: The axle of the spinning wheel defines the spin axis. 
The Rotor
Rotor: The rotor is constrained to spin about an axis, which is always perpendicular to the axis of the inner gimbal. 
What Does It do Once In Motion? 
Once the gyroscope is in motion, the gyroscope's inner wheel maintains the orientation of its rotation even as its outer frame is tilted. 
The inertial guidance systems used by orbital spacecraft require a small platform that is stabilized to an extraordinary degree of precision; this is still done by traditional gyroscopes.
Is The Gyroscope Still Used? 
Gyroscopes tend to be from around $5-$10.

Today, modern gyroscopes come in three general varieties: mechanical gyroscopes, gas-bearing gyroscopes and optical gyroscopes.

A mechanical gyroscope essentially consists of a spinning mass that rotates around its axis
The Mechanical Gyroscope
Gas-bearing gyroscopes are used to maintain orientation and provide stability in boats, aircraft and spacecraft. This gyroscopic function is achieved by a wheel inside each gyro that spins at a constant rate of 19,200 rpm on gas bearings. This wheel is mounted in a sealed cylinder, which floats in a thick fluid.

An optical Gyroscope senses changes in orientation using the Sagnac effect, thus performing the function of a mechanical gyroscope. However its principle of operation is instead based on the interference of light which has passed through a coil of optical fibre, which can be as long as 5 kilometres
